It is my pleasure to announce KUMSN’s bimonthly Newsletter, starting in May. Our newsletter will include relevant articles, links to related activities, events, book and movie reviews, and research. In this way, we hope to continue to raise the visibility of the issue of unwed Korean moms, inform/educate, promote discussion?and debate, and foster real change in Korea.  We are the only organization to do this, full-time.

POSITIVE CHANGE FOR UNWED MOMS

I just returned from my eighth trip to Korea, and am pleased to report that there is real and rapidly growing interest in this issue, and change is already occurring.  The Korean government is expanding support for unwed moms; though limited, it is a start.  We had the pleasure and privilege of meeting with Attorney Lee Myung Sook, Chair, Human Rights, Korean Bar association.  She is keenly interested in helping the moms.  KUMSN sponsored a very well-received Forum on unwed moms, held by Korean Womens Development Institute, at which KUMSN-sponsored research by KWDI was presented.  We met with The Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission (ACRC), which has already made recommendations for increased support of the moms.

However, we are most excited that the moms themselves are coming forward, speaking out and being interviewed. They are forming, and seek NGO status for, their new organization, Korean Unwed Mothers Family Association.  One member, Ms. Choi Hyung Sook, a major presenter at the Forum, is their Team Manager of External Relations.

우선, 한국미혼모지원네트워크의 뉴스레터가 오는 5월부터 발행되게 되었음을 기쁘게 알려드립니다. 우리 단체의 활동, 미혼모에 관련된 영화, 책, 행사 등 풍부한 내용들이 실릴 예정입니다. 이로써 국내 유일의 미혼모 권익옹호단체로서의 한국미혼모지원네트워크는 보다 내실 있는 정보로 여러분에게 다가가게 될 것을 약속 드립니다.
 
최근 저는 8번째 한국방문을 마치고 돌아왔습니다. 이번 방문을 통해 미혼모에 대한 관심이 한국 사회에서 빠르게 확산되고 또 실제변화가 일어나고 있음을 느낄 수 있었습니다. 비록 청소년 미혼모에게만 지원되어 제한적이긴 하지만 한국정부는 미혼모지원예산을 마련하였습니다.
 
방한 기간 중 한국미혼모지원네트워크가 후원한 한국여성정책연구원의 60차 여성정책 포럼이 매우 성공적으로 끝났음을 목격하였습니다. 또한 한국사회에서 인권 향상에 많은 공헌을 한 다양한 인사들을 만날 수 있었습니다.

그러나 무엇보다도 미혼모 당사자들이 권익옹호를 위해 활발히 움직이고 있음을 가슴 벅차게 목격하였습니다. 그들은 현재 한국미혼모가족협회라고 하는 단체를 만들기 위해 노력하고 있습니다. 대외협력 팀장 최현숙씨는 한국여성정책연구원 정책포럼에 참석하여 미혼모로서의 경험을 당당하게 발표하였습니다..
